Location Description
Ridgecrest is on the verge of a population explosion with several thousand people that will be moving there as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC). There is about $200,000,000 worth of new construction on the base to house these Navy personnel and defense contractors. The Southern Sierra Regional Hospital is in the process of doubling it's capacity, and there are 6 new motels in plan check or under construction. This is one of the few cities in the country that is not suffering from the economic slowdown. In 2009, China Lake Naval Weapons Station had a $1.4B budget, employed about 4500 people directly with an annual payroll of over $400,000,000, and paid an additional $650,000,000 to defense contractors. The base also received 30,000 visitors last year.
